Where's my refund?
If you e-filed your taxes, it typically takes about 21 days to get your refund after the IRS accepts your return.
- E-filed taxes
- 24–48 hours later:Return accepted by the IRS
- About 2 days later:Refund approved by the IRS
- About 19 days later:Refund sent or deposited
If you mailed a paper return, it takes 6 weeks or more from the day the IRS receives it, and you can check its status 4 weeks after you mail it.
- Mailed your return
- About 4 weeks later:Return received by the IRS
- 6 weeks or more later:Refund sent or deposited
Times are typical estimates, based on the IRS's guidance. They don't include the days your bank may take to process a direct deposit, or the time a paper check takes to arrive in the mail. Some returns need extra review, which takes longer.
Certain tax credits may delay your federal refund
If you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC), the law doesn't let the IRS send your refund before mid-February, and that holds the whole refund, not just the credit. If you file early and online, with direct deposit, you can usually expect it by early March.
Look up your state refund
Each state tracks its own refunds. Choose your state to open its official refund page.
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming have no state income tax, so there is no state refund to track.
